Western Australia’s clean energy transition achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the second Kwinana Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), valued at $661 million. The project boosts the state’s ability to integrate renewable energy and ensure grid stability.
Key Highlights
Project Specs:
288 battery modules and 72 inverter units.
800MWh of storage with 200MW capacity.
Powers up to 450,000 homes for four hours.
Timeline:
Construction began in July 2023 and will go live before Christmas 2024.
Created approximately 200 construction jobs.
Driving Renewable Records
The announcement coincides with a record 85.1% renewable energy contribution to the SWIS grid on 17 November. WA has significantly increased renewables on the grid from 14% in 2017 to over 34% in 2023, with continued progress driven by investments in rooftop solar and battery systems.
Future Outlook
The Kwinana BESS complements other large-scale projects, including Neoen’s 560MW/2,240MWh battery in Collie and the upcoming Collie BESS, set for 2025.
The state is committing $5.4 billion to its energy transition and phasing out coal-fired power by 2030.
Statements from Leaders
Premier Roger Cook:
“The Kwinana big batteries will keep our energy system reliable, enabling more renewables and a sensible coal phase-out.”
Energy Minister Reece Whitby:
“This investment ensures clean, affordable, and reliable power, soaking up daytime solar and delivering electricity when needed most.”
Western Australia is setting the stage for a cleaner energy future, with projects like Kwinana playing a critical role in ensuring reliability and sustainability.
