The Western Australian Government is piloting a vanadium flow battery in Kununurra to test its effectiveness in the Kimberley’s unique climate. With a capacity of 78KW and 220KWh, the battery is designed for temperature resilience and extended energy storage, ideal for the region's needs.
Advancing Energy Storage
The project aims to provide Horizon Power with insights into integrating long-duration storage into its microgrids and off-grid systems. It complements existing large-scale batteries in Kwinana and Collie, which manage excess rooftop solar power.
Collaborative Innovation
VSUN Energy, a subsidiary of Australian Vanadium, is supplying the battery and will collaborate on system testing for 12 months.
Ministerial Support
Energy Minister Reece Whitby emphasized the role of battery storage in supporting the state’s clean, reliable, and affordable energy transition.
Local Benefits
Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna hailed the initiative as a step toward securing affordable and resilient power for regional communities.
Horizon Power’s Focus
CEO Stephanie Unwin highlighted the importance of testing the battery under extreme conditions to ensure performance and contribute to decarbonization efforts.
This pilot showcases the potential of long-duration energy storage in challenging environments and sets the stage for cleaner energy solutions across Western Australia.
