A New Chapter in Clean Energy Careers

The Victorian Government is taking bold steps to future-proof its renewable energy workforce by launching tenders for a dedicated Wind Worker Training Centre. Backed by a $4.9 million investment, the facility aims to equip Victorians with the skills needed for both onshore and offshore wind industries, ensuring the state remains at the forefront of Australia’s clean energy transition.

Victoria Powers Up with Wind Workforce Training Boost

Training Built for Real Jobs

The new centre isn’t just about classrooms and theory. The selected training provider will be required to collaborate closely with unions and industry leaders to tailor programs that meet the practical demands of the evolving wind energy sector. From entry-level roles to specialist technician positions, the training will serve every career stage.

Helping Workers Transition with Confidence

In a show of support for the region’s existing workforce, the centre will also offer retraining opportunities for workers affected by the transition away from fossil fuels. Coal station workers in Gippsland, for example, will have a clear path into the offshore wind industry—keeping skills alive while embracing new technologies.

More Than Just Energy Roles

Beyond wind turbine technicians and engineers, the sector is also opening doors to professionals in fields like IT, finance, logistics, and stakeholder engagement. The ripple effect of clean energy projects means there’s something for everyone—whether behind a desk or on-site.

Workforce Projections Soar

Victoria's energy workforce is set to more than double by 2040, reaching over 67,000 workers. Construction peaks alone are expected to see over 4,000 workers in onshore wind and 2,300 in offshore wind projects. This surge shows just how vital investment in training will be to meet growing demand.

Supporting Ambitious Energy Goals

With a renewable generation target of 95% by 2035, Victoria is relying heavily on wind energy to get there. The government’s latest Offshore Wind Energy Implementation Statement outlines clear targets—2GW by 2032, 4GW by 2035, and 9GW by 2040—setting the stage for massive industry growth.

Tenders Now Open

Tenders for the Wind Worker Training Centre are officially open and will close at 5pm on Wednesday, 16 July 2025. Interested providers are encouraged to apply and become a part of this exciting shift in Australia’s energy landscape.

A Word from the Minister

Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, underscored the dual benefits of renewable energy: “Victoria is already seeing the lowest energy prices in the market thanks to renewables. This training centre ensures we can keep prices low, create jobs, and deliver clean energy—all at the same time.”
