Strengthening Communities Against Power Outages

Victoria has successfully completed its $7.5 million Energy Resilience Solutions (ERS) program, ensuring communities have reliable power during severe storms and bushfires.

Victoria Enhances Energy Resilience with Back-Up Power Hubs

Key Highlights of the Program
  • 24 Community Energy Hubs: Equipped with solar panels, batteries, and generators to maintain power during extreme weather events.

  • Strategic Locations: Hubs are placed in high-risk areas such as the Yarra Ranges, Gippsland, Dandenong Ranges, and the Great Ocean Road.

  • Real-World Impact: Backup systems already proved effective in Emerald and Gembrook during storms in February 2024.

Benefits for Local Communities
  • Reliable Emergency Support: Hubs provide a safe space for charging devices, heating food, and accessing hot water during prolonged blackouts.

  • Lower Energy Costs: Reducing reliance on diesel generators for councils operating these facilities.

Additional Energy Resilience Initiatives
  • Cockatoo Energy Hub: Features a 13.6kW solar array, 52kWh battery, and backup generator supporting three community buildings.

  • Expanding Backup Systems: Projects in Omeo, Mallacoota, and Corryong include town-wide microgrids and the 100 Neighbourhood Batteries Program, enhancing grid resilience.

Government Commitment to Energy Security
  • Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for Energy and Resources:

“By investing in local energy solutions and learning from past outages, we are ensuring stronger protections for communities.”

  • Daniela De Martino, Member for Monbulk:

“These energy hubs are a lifeline, providing essential services during prolonged power outages.”
