Government Backs Recommendations to Boost Preparedness
The Victorian Government has embraced all 19 recommendations from the Network Outage Review, initiated after the extreme February 2024 weather event that left over 531,000 customers without power and damaged 12,000km of powerlines.
Key Actions from the Review
1. Strengthening Accountability:
Electricity businesses will now report annually on their emergency risk management practices, including resources, processes, and contractor arrangements for repairs.
2. Faster Support for Prolonged Outages:
The Extended Loss of Supply Support (ELOSS) Payment Scheme will require distribution businesses to provide financial support to customers after 72 hours of power outages.
3. Resource Sharing Across Networks:
Formalised resource-sharing agreements will ensure quick deployment of staff and reduced restoration times after severe weather events.
4. Community-Centric Emergency Planning:
Network businesses must join Regional Emergency Management Planning Committees and participate in emergency drills to test their readiness.
Statements from Key Leaders
Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio:
“We’re ensuring privately-owned power companies prioritize reconnecting Victorians and are well-prepared for storm events.”
Member for Monbulk, Daniela De Martino:
“We’ve listened to affected communities and built a plan to ensure faster restoration and resilience for Victoria’s transmission network.”
A Resilient Energy Future
These reforms aim to strengthen Victoria’s power grid, safeguard communities from future outages, and ensure power companies are held accountable for their emergency responses.
