Vanadium Flow Battery Powers Up Horizon Power’s Energy Future

Horizon Power's Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) pilot has reached a major milestone, as the first vanadium flow battery (VFB) successfully completed factory testing. Manufactured by Invinity Energy Systems, the 220kWh battery is now en route to Kununurra, Western Australia, for installation.

This marks the first use of vanadium electrolyte produced by Australian Vanadium Limited (AVL) in a fully operational battery, supporting Horizon Power's efforts to explore temperature-resilient, long-duration storage solutions for its remote networks.

The pilot aims to demonstrate the potential for vanadium batteries to deliver renewable energy over extended periods, particularly in challenging environments. With a capacity to deliver up to 78kW of power, the VFB is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, making it ideal for regional energy storage.
