Tasmania is set to welcome its first large-scale solar project, a $500 million initiative by TasRex, on the historic Connorville Estates near Cressy. The Northern Midlands solar farm will generate 288 MW, enough to power 70,000 homes, while supporting sheep grazing on the property.
Solar Energy Meets Agriculture
Connorville Estates, a grazing property with a 200-year history, will integrate solar panels with rotational grazing for around 2,000 sheep. Roderick O’Connor, the property owner, highlighted the dual benefit of sustainable energy generation alongside high-quality wool production.
A Step Towards Tasmania’s 200% Renewable Target
Hydro Tasmania’s off-take agreement ensures the project’s construction, set to begin in 2026 and complete by 2027. Acting CEO Erin van Maanen emphasized the synergy of solar and hydropower in delivering reliable, low-cost energy while supporting Tasmania's ambitious renewable energy goals.
A Vision for a Renewable Future
TasRex plans to expand its renewable portfolio with 5 GW of wind and solar projects across Tasmania, including green hydrogen production. CEO Bess Clark described the solar project as transformative, redefining possibilities for sustainable energy on the island.
Challenges in Renewable Expansion
Despite progress, Tasmania faces local opposition to large-scale wind projects like Robbins Island, raising concerns about environmental impacts and the proposed Marinus Link for energy export.
Powering the Future
This landmark solar farm marks a crucial milestone in Tasmania’s renewable journey, balancing clean energy goals with community and environmental considerations.
