A new solar farm and battery hybrid project in New South Wales' Southern Tablelands is set to become a hub for cutting-edge energy technologies. In collaboration with the University of Sydney, developer Spark Renewables will integrate a test-bed facility for new clean energy advancements, including the promising semi-solid state battery technology.

University Partnership to Test Advanced Batteries

The Wattle Creek energy hub will serve as a testing ground for the University of Sydney's researchers and its lithium-sulfur battery spin-off, Gelion. The test-bed will include a 100 kVw simulated "dummy load" for energy trials, marking the site as an innovation center for renewable energy.

Hybrid Energy Infrastructure with Dual BESS Systems

The 265 MW Wattle Creek solar farm will feature two battery energy storage systems (BESS). One will be a two-hour, 100 MW BESS, while a separate four-hour, 350 MW BESS will be on-site, both connecting to the nearby Marulan substation. Although the project initially included wind power, this was omitted in the final design.

Agricultural Considerations in Solar Energy Development

Since the project is located on the University of Sydney's Arthursleigh farm, sheep grazing will remain a key activity. Plans for fencing and watering points are included to ensure livestock coexists with the energy infrastructure.

Surrounding Industrial and Clean Energy Projects

Wattle Creek’s location is not in a designated renewable energy zone (REZ), but it is near multiple industrial sites and clean energy projects, including quarries, mines, and 12 other wind and solar farms. Energy Australia has also explored potential developments in the area, although its Marulan gas-fired power plant remains uncertain.

Environmental Concerns and Conservation Measures

The site, which has long been used for research purposes, is under environmental review due to the presence of endangered species like the Gang-Gang cockatoo and the South-eastern Glossy Black cockatoo. A management plan includes habitat preservation efforts, such as relocating hollow logs and native timber to protect local wildlife.
