Advancing Australia’s Largest Renewable Project

Snowy Hydro has shared an update on Snowy 2.0, Australia’s largest renewable energy project, which remains on track despite recent work stoppages. The project will link Tantangara and Talbingo dams with an underground power station, and construction is progressing across multiple key areas.

Power Station CavernsExcavation of the power station complex is now 35% complete, with the transformer hall nearly 50% excavated and the machine hall reaching 28m deep. The drill and blast tunnels are 93% complete, providing critical access within the station.

Snowy 2.0 Construction Makes Steady Progress

Reservoir Intakes & Surge Shafts
  • Tantangara Intake: Construction logistics are aided by a 40m-high tower crane, and over 6,600m³ of concrete has been poured.

  • Talbingo Intake: The 825m connection tunnel excavation has reached 370m, supported by a 70m tower crane.

  • Marica Surge Shaft: Excavation has passed 151m of its planned 240m depth, making it one of the widest and deepest operational shafts globally.

  • Downstream Surge Shaft: The 200m shaft excavation is 68% complete, helping regulate water pressure in different operating modes.

Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) on Track
  • TBM Florence is working on the 17km headrace tunnel, now 3km in.

  • TBM Lady Eileen Hudson has completed 85% of the 6km tailrace tunnel, with the main access tunnel (2.85km) finished.

  • TBM Kirsten has begun the 1.6km Inclined Pressure Shaft, with 14% completed.

  • TBM4 Approved: A fourth TBM has been greenlit to navigate geological fault zones, set to begin work by late 2025.

Restart After Work Stoppages

Underground operations resumed in March 2025, with all TBMs and power station excavation back in action. Above-ground construction continued uninterrupted, keeping Snowy 2.0 on course.
