The Victorian Government has introduced a new pilot program in Ballarat to help residents easily switch to electric living. The State Electricity Commission (SEC) is offering a digital tool designed to guide households through the process of going all-electric and reducing their energy bills.
SEC's New Digital Tool for Energy Efficiency
As part of the pilot, the SEC has created an easy-to-use online platform. Through a short survey, users provide information about their home's energy use, and the tool then offers personalized recommendations. These suggestions include which electric appliances are best suited for their home, potential costs, return on investment, government rebates, and estimated carbon emission reductions. This service is not limited to Ballarat – it's available for all Victorians.
Tailored Support for Ballarat Households
Ballarat residents who want more details or are ready to upgrade their appliances can connect with SEC-approved installers through the tool. These professionals offer free home visits, providing custom quotes to help households make informed decisions. The pilot, running through 2024, also includes the cities of Casey and Merri-bek. Following its evaluation, the SEC plans to roll out the program to other regions across Victoria.
Potential Energy Savings for Households
Switching entirely to electric appliances offers significant financial benefits. Victorian households currently using both gas and electricity could save approximately $1400 per year by transitioning to electric. Households with solar systems could see savings of over $2700 annually. The digital tool helps residents understand these potential savings and simplifies the process of making the switch.
Early Success of the SEC Planner
The planner has already garnered interest, with over 3000 households using the tool in its first month. To provide additional support, the SEC is offering free online information sessions, where energy experts will answer questions and provide advice on electrification.
Driving Renewable Energy Investments
Beyond household savings, the SEC is focused on accelerating Victoria’s shift to renewable energy. With a $1 billion investment, the SEC is working on projects that will deliver 4.5GW of renewable energy, enough to power 1.5 million homes. All profits from these projects will be reinvested into further renewable initiatives, boosting the pipeline of clean energy developments while creating 59,000 new jobs, including 6000 apprenticeships and training opportunities.
Government Leaders Discuss SEC’s Impact
Premier Jacinta Allan highlighted the SEC's role in helping families cut down on energy expenses while fostering future renewable energy projects. “We’re making it easier for families to save on their energy bills with the SEC, while also building the renewable energy systems we need for the future,” she said. Lily D’Ambrosio, Minister for the SEC, emphasized that Ballarat households are getting the tools and support needed to reduce energy costs and contribute to the state’s transition toward clean energy.
Ballarat Takes the Lead
Ballarat is leading the way in this pilot, being the first regional community to benefit from the SEC’s program. Michaela Settle, Victorian Member for Eureka, praised the initiative, noting how it helps local families switch to electric living while saving money. Juliana Addison, Victorian Member for Wendouree, pointed out that the program provides households with tailored electrification plans, supported by trusted professionals.
