Maroondah and Yarra Ranges Join the Energy Transition
Residents of Maroondah and the Yarra Ranges are the latest to benefit from the State Electricity Commission’s (SEC) consumer pilot, designed to help households transition to more energy-efficient electric appliances. The expanded program allows locals to access verified SEC installers for the installation of energy-efficient heat pump hot water systems.

Personalised Planning for Lower Energy Bills
Through the SEC’s digital electric home planner, households can receive a customised roadmap for electrifying their homes. The tool offers guidance on appliance selection, estimated costs, annual savings, return on investment, and available rebates and discounts—helping consumers make informed, cost-effective choices.
Access to Trusted Installers and Free Consultations
Participating households can obtain quotes on the most suitable heat pump options and receive in-home visits from SEC-approved installers. These visits help provide more accurate pricing and give homeowners the opportunity to ask detailed questions.
Big Savings with Heat Pump Technology
According to the Victorian Government, heating water accounts for roughly 20% of a household’s energy use. Replacing gas or older electric systems with a heat pump could save up to $330 annually. For homes with solar panels, the savings are even more significant, with solar-powered hot water heating often costing nothing at all.
Rebates and Discounts Make the Switch Easy
Eligible households can unlock up to $1,000 in rebates via the Solar Homes program and around $500 in discounts through the Victorian Energy Upgrades program. These financial incentives aim to ease the transition and encourage widespread adoption.
Real-Life Success: A Case Study
Ringwood East resident Alex Robertson switched to a heat pump in 2024, complementing his solar setup and reverse cycle air conditioning. He reports saving about $400 a year on energy bills and praises the ease of installation and reliability of his new system.
SEC’s Ongoing Commitment
Initially trialed in Ballan and now extended to other regions including Casey, Merri-bek and Ballarat, the SEC consumer pilot has supported over 100,000 Victorian households with energy-saving guidance. More than 10,000 people have already used the digital planner to map out their switch to electric living.
SEC CEO Chris Miller emphasized the initiative’s role in the state's energy transformation. “The SEC isn’t just investing in renewable generation and storage—it’s also about enabling households to take advantage of the clean energy transition,” he said.
Making Energy Efficiency Simple and Accessible
Victorian Minister for the SEC, Lily D’Ambrosio, praised the program’s simplicity: “It takes the guesswork out of choosing the right heat pump and shows how much money you can save,” she said. Local MP Shaun Leane echoed this, noting how the initiative empowers families with clear, trusted information.
