Innovation in Action Since 2016

SA Power Networks has been harnessing the power of drones since 2016, deploying a skilled team of remote pilots to enhance power reliability and safety across South Australia. Backed by a strong focus on innovation, the utility’s drone initiative is now a core part of its operations.

SA Power Networks Elevates Grid Reliability with Advanced Drone Program

Training and Expertise Lead the Way

The program’s success is driven by pilot expertise. Each team member undergoes a rigorous training regimen to obtain a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) remote pilot’s license. The training includes airspace safety, operational regulations, emergency procedures, and precision flying. With a recent cohort of new pilots, SA Power Networks now boasts 67 trained professionals.

Finding the Unseen: Fault Detection from the Air

Using drones, the utility can detect faults that ground crews would struggle to locate. In the southeast, for example, drones were instrumental in identifying a recurring outage issue, enabling a quick and precise fix. This method significantly improves network reliability and reduces customer disruptions.

Pioneering Long-Range Nighttime Inspections

In a national first, SA Power Networks has been authorised to conduct long-range nighttime drone inspections. Using thermal imaging, these drones detect “hot joints” — potential failure points — that are easier to identify at night. This proactive method allows crews to make repairs before outages occur.

Overcoming Terrain Challenges with Heavy-Lift Drones

In tough environments like the Adelaide Hills, heavy-lift drones have replaced manual labor for tasks such as stringing powerlines. This technology was recently used in Mylor, making powerline installation faster and safer, even in steep and obstructed areas.

The Benefits of SA Power’s Drone Program

  • Improved safety: Reduced need for workers to enter dangerous terrain or private properties

  • Higher efficiency: Faster fault detection and streamlined installations

  • Lower customer disruption: Nighttime inspections and quicker project execution

  • Environmental impact: Lower emissions and less disturbance to rural properties
