A new community battery, set to be installed by SA Power Networks in collaboration with Flinders Ranges Council, aims to enhance local resilience during extended power outages. The battery will be housed at the Hawker Community Sports Centre, ensuring vital backup power for the community when needed most.

SA Community Battery Strengthens Emergency Preparedness

This initiative is part of a broader statewide project co-funded by SA Power Networks and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), which will see eight batteries deployed across regional South Australia, each serving unique use cases. One such project in Kimbra has already been announced and will offer up to eight hours of backup power during outages.

Flinders Ranges Council CEO, Sean Holden, highlighted the importance of the project, stating, “Our region has faced prolonged outages in recent months. This collaboration with SA Power Networks is a crucial step toward improving our community’s resilience. It’s especially vital for our more vulnerable residents who rely on a stable power supply.”

SA Power Networks Operations Manager, Chris Bennett, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the company’s commitment to supporting local communities. “We acknowledge the difficulties caused by outages and appreciate the patience of our customers. Our focus remains on ensuring a safe and efficient restoration process. This partnership with the Flinders Ranges Council underscores our shared dedication to providing reliable power and peace of mind to residents,” he said.

Additionally, SA Power Networks continues to work closely with the South Australian Government and transmission network operator, ElectraNet, to strengthen the region’s long-term electricity security.

To keep residents informed, a Community Information Session will be held at the Hawker Community Sports Centre on Tuesday, June 17, from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, just before the Council’s scheduled meeting. The battery installation is expected to be completed by late 2025.
