Queensland’s Coal Comeback Ignites Climate Debate

Just two years ago, Queensland made headlines for its bold energy transition plan, receiving praise from climate icon and former US Vice President Al Gore. Gore hailed the state’s ambitious goal of phasing out coal-fired power by the end of the next decade, despite Queensland being one of the world’s most carbon-intensive energy producers.
However, as Queensland gears up for its upcoming election, that ambitious vision is being questioned. The state’s reliance on coal is creeping back into the spotlight, and environmentalists are pushing back hard.
Renewable Gains at Risk
Since 2018, Queensland has ramped up its renewable energy efforts, increasing its share of renewables to about 28% of total electricity generation. But Queensland Conservation Council (QCC) Director Dave Copeman fears that political uncertainty could derail progress. With Queensland’s influence extending beyond Australia, Copeman warns that the state’s energy decisions could have far-reaching consequences for the entire region.
Title: Emissions Targets vs. Coal Politics
In 2024, Queensland legislated its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, coupled with ambitious renewable energy targets. However, despite supporting these emissions targets, the Liberal National Party (LNP) continues to back coal-fired power. LNP leader David Crisafulli has refused to rule out keeping the state’s coal plants open indefinitely, creating a conflict between short-term political goals and long-term environmental commitments. Climate advocates argue this could slow Queensland’s energy transition significantly.
Title: Nuclear Energy Uncertainty
The possibility of nuclear energy entering Queensland’s energy mix adds another layer of complexity to the debate. Although LNP leader Crisafulli has dismissed nuclear as part of his immediate plans, federal opposition leader Peter Dutton has been pushing the idea. Queensland law requires a plebiscite before any nuclear projects can be developed, but the prospect of nuclear power remains a wildcard in the state’s energy conversation.
Coal's Persistent Presence in Queensland’s Energy Mix
While Queensland has made strides in reducing emissions through changes in land use and deforestation practices, its electricity sector remains a stubborn source of greenhouse gases. Renewable energy, while growing, has only been able to meet rising demand rather than displace coal. Clare Silcock, energy strategist at QCC, warns that keeping coal plants operational could stunt investments in renewable technologies, while also driving up electricity costs.
The Future of Queensland’s Supergrid
The centerpiece of Queensland’s energy transition plan is a proposed “supergrid” of renewable power sources, including solar, wind, and pumped hydro projects. A key part of this supergrid is the massive Pioneer-Burdekin pumped hydro project, which is more than twice the size of Snowy 2.0. However, the LNP has announced plans to scrap this large-scale project in favor of smaller, decentralized hydro solutions. Experts argue that smaller projects may mitigate risks, especially as battery storage technology becomes cheaper and more efficient.
Renewable Energy Industry Rides Momentum
Despite the challenges, Queensland’s renewable energy industry is thriving. Over 20GW of renewable and storage projects are currently in development across the state, and the Queensland Renewable Energy Council (QREC) reports that investment in clean energy is at an all-time high. This is not just transforming the state’s energy landscape, but also creating jobs and generating excitement, especially in regional communities where many of these projects are being developed.
