Queensland-based PowerCap, a subsidiary of Zero Emissions Developments, is gearing up to produce sodium batteries starting early 2025, with prices expected to be 30% cheaper than lithium-ion alternatives. The company already has a queue of commercial and residential clients, including significant interest from the US.

PowerCap to Launch Lower-Cost Sodium Batteries in 2025
Safer, Affordable, and Efficient

PowerCap’s sodium batteries offer several advantages:

Cost-Effectiveness: 30% cheaper than lithium-ion batteries.

Safety: Reduced risk of thermal runaway.

Temperature Tolerance: Operates between -40°C to 80°C.

Fast Charging: Can charge at 3C rates, enabling a 20-minute charge time for a 100 kW battery.

While the energy density is slightly lower than lithium batteries, sodium offers longer lifecycles and improved safety, making it ideal for various applications.

Product Line and Future Plans

PowerCap’s sodium battery range includes:

1. Plug-and-play solutions for residential use.

2. Commercial batteries starting at 50 kWh, scalable up to 130 kWh or beyond.

The company is also developing solid-state batteries, expected to have greater energy density. With the technology already established, they aim for large-scale production in two years.

Sustainability Commitment

PowerCap plans to source sodium from desalinated water, rather than mining, for a more eco-friendly solution. Additionally, the company is investing in recycling facilities to ensure their batteries are 100% recyclable, using materials like black carbon from recycled plastics and old tyres.

Global Manufacturing and Expansion

To meet growing demand, PowerCap is exploring manufacturing plants in the US and India, strategically targeting their primary markets while mitigating potential trade issues.

Challenges and Confidence

Despite setbacks faced by other non-lithium battery makers like Redflow, PowerCap is confident in its competitive edge, citing cost, safety, and performance as key factors. Their dual focus on innovation and sustainability positions them as a promising player in the battery market.
