Major Step Forward for Renewable Energy

The New South Wales Independent Planning Commission (IPC) has given the green light to the 372MW Hills of Gold Wind Farm. Located southeast of Tamworth, the project is set to become a key player in the state’s renewable energy future. Originally proposed with 64 turbines, the approved version of the wind farm will feature 62 turbines, a 100MW battery energy storage system, and a 330kV transmission line.

Boost to Local Economy and Job Creation

The project is expected to create 211 construction jobs and 28 operational positions, providing a significant boost to the local economy. The wind farm is projected to generate enough renewable energy to power up to 150,000 homes, directly supporting New South Wales’ push toward net zero emissions and its renewable energy goals.

Community and Government Support

The project’s approval follows extensive community consultation and government review. Tamworth Regional Council and over 50 people objected to the original proposal, triggering a detailed investigation by the IPC. Public hearings and consultations were held, with 51 speakers and hundreds of written submissions. The process also included advice from the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI), which recommended the removal of 17 turbines from the original plan.

Refining the Project for Maximum Benefit

The Hills of Gold Wind Farm underwent multiple revisions based on input from community members and environmental experts. After careful consideration, 15 of the 17 removed turbines were reinstated, following recommendations from the Independent Expert Advisory Panel on Energy Transition. This change ensures the project strikes a balance between energy production, environmental impact, and community concerns.

Tackling Community and Environmental Concerns

To address concerns from local residents, Hills of Gold Wind Farm Pty Ltd is required to implement measures such as landscaping and vegetation screening for homes within 5km of the turbines, along with road upgrades to manage traffic during construction. Additionally, plans for minimizing the impact on flora and fauna, as well as emergency bushfire management, must be in place before construction begins.

ENGIE’s Commitment to Regional NSW

ENGIE, the company behind the wind farm, has welcomed the approval with enthusiasm. Laura Caspari, Managing Director of Renewables for ENGIE Australia, highlighted that the project is a result of years of collaboration between government, local communities, and environmental experts. The wind farm represents a massive $833 million investment in regional NSW and nearly 400 new jobs during the construction phase.

A Bright Future for Renewable Energy in NSW

With the Hills of Gold Wind Farm leading the charge, the future of renewable energy in New South Wales looks promising. ENGIE is optimistic that the project will contribute significantly to energy security and long-term sustainability goals, serving as a model for future developments across the state.
