NSW Kicks Off Community Consultation for Hunter-Central Coast REZ
Upgrading Power Lines for a Greener Future
Ausgrid has launched community consultations for the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), the first in Australia to upgrade existing power infrastructure for greater renewable energy capacity.

Key Highlights
Network Upgrades: Existing distribution poles and wires will be replaced with higher-capacity lines, allowing 1GW of renewable energy to flow into the grid.
Community Engagement: Drop-in sessions in Singleton, Muswellbrook, and online give residents a chance to share feedback.
Job Creation: The project is expected to generate 175 jobs, including roles for engineers, electricians, and laborers.
Energy Reliability & Lower Bills: Fast-tracking renewable connections will improve power supply and reduce energy costs for homes and businesses.
2030 Net Zero Goals: The REZ plays a key role in NSW’s renewable energy targets, already pushing the state past the halfway mark toward its 2030 generation goal.
Government & Industry Support
NSW Minister for Climate Change & Energy, Penny Sharpe:
"This is the first REZ replacing lower-capacity power lines with higher-capacity ones—essentially putting fatter lines on poles to reduce community and environmental impact."
Kelly Wood, Ausgrid Group Executive Transmission Development & Growth:
"We’re committed to working with landowners and minimizing impact while maximizing community benefits."
What’s Next?
Early works have begun in Upper Hunter, with design finalization for regulatory and environmental approvals. More community engagement opportunities are coming as NSW accelerates toward a cleaner energy future.
