Iron ore billionaire Andrew Forrest has unveiled an ambitious plan to eliminate fossil fuels from Fortescue's mining operations by 2030, calling "Net Zero 2050" a misleading target. His detailed climate transition strategy, revealed at a UN-sponsored event in New York, outlines how Fortescue will achieve "Real Zero" without carbon offsets.

“Net Zero is a Con:” Forrest’s Plan to Eliminate Fossil Fuels from Fortescue Mines by 2030

Transitioning to Green Energy

Fortescue is set to replace its entire fleet of heavy mining equipment – including 360 electric haul trucks, dozers, and excavators – with green alternatives. These will be powered by 1.8 MWh batteries charged using newly developed 6 MW chargers. The company also plans to create its first fully electric mine site by 2027.

Renewable Investments and Replacing Diesel

The company is also investing in solar and wind energy, aiming to build over one gigawatt of solar capacity and 4,500 GWh of battery storage. Fortescue plans to replace 800 small diesel generators with green solutions by 2030.

Leading by Example

Despite skepticism from some quarters, Forrest's plan is shaking up the mining industry, pushing competitors like Rio Tinto and BHP to accelerate their own transitions. He urges the Australian government to repurpose fossil fuel subsidies to support early decarbonization efforts.
