Moomba CCS Project Successfully Commissioned
The Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project has reached a major milestone. Beach Energy announced the successful commissioning of one of the largest CCS operations in the world. All facilities, pipelines, and injection wells have been brought online, marking a significant step forward in the global effort to reduce emissions.
CO2 Injection Surpasses Expectations
Following the initial CO2 injection on 30 September 2024, the Moomba CCS project has rapidly scaled up to meet its capacity, injecting CO2 at daily rates that have exceeded expectations for this phase. The project is expected to capture and store around 1.7 million tonnes of CO2 annually, showcasing its potential as a key player in emissions reduction.
How Moomba CCS Works
Located near the Moomba Gas Plant in South Australia’s Cooper Basin, the project includes advanced infrastructure such as a four-stage compressor, five injection wells, CO2 dehydration systems, and pipelines. Depleted underground reservoirs in the Strzelecki and Marabooka fields will store the CO2 captured from the gas plant’s emissions.
A Game-Changer for Emissions Reduction
Brett Woods, Managing Director and CEO of Beach Energy hailed the project as a turning point in Australia’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "Once operating at full capacity, Moomba CCS will store all vented reservoir CO2 from the Moomba Gas Plant, reducing Beach Energy’s emissions by approximately one-third," he said.
The Critical Role of CCS in Energy Transition
Mr. Woods emphasized the importance of CCS in the global energy transition. "Natural gas remains a vital component in our energy mix, and CCS is essential for achieving low-emission energy supplies. The International Energy Agency has made it clear that reaching net-zero by 2050 will be nearly impossible without CCS technology."
Commitment to Sustainability Goals
Thanks to Beach Energy’s significant investment in the Moomba CCS project, the company is on track to meet its goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions intensity by 35% by 2030, setting an example for sustainable energy practices in Australia and beyond.
