New Solar and Battery Project in Coal Country

Terrain Solar and Ratch Australia have submitted plans for a new solar and battery project in the heart of the Hunter Valley, a region dominated by coal mines. The Maison Dieu project aims to combine 60 megawatts (MW) of solar power with 40 MW of battery storage (80 MWh), strategically located near the Singleton substation, just northwest of Singleton, NSW.

Hunter Valley Solar and Battery Project Seeks Approval Amid Coal MinesSolar and Battery Project in Coal Country Terrain Solar and Ratch Australia have submitted plans for a new solar and battery project in the heart of the Hunter Valley, a region dominated by coal mines. The Maison Dieu project aims to combine 60 megawatts (MW) of solar power with 40 MW of battery storage (80 MWh), strategically located near the Singleton substation, just northwest of Singleton, NSW. Surrounded by Coal Mines The project will occupy 230 hectares of grazing land and is surrounded by four coal mines—Ravensworth, Ashton, Rix’s Creek, and Mount Thorley Warkworth. Just a few kilometers away from the now-closed Liddell coal-fired power plant and the Bayswater coal-fired station, which is slated for closure in the early 2030s, the project represents a shift towards renewable energy in a traditionally coal-dominated area. Supporting the Energy Transition The proposal underscores its role in Australia’s energy transition, moving away from centralized fossil fuel generation to smaller, more dispersed renewable energy sources. The project is part of a broader effort to replace the 8,000 MW of coal-fired power set to retire by 2040, providing low-emission energy to meet future demand. Leveraging Renewable Energy Zones The Maison Dieu project, along with Ratch’s recent 100 MW battery proposal at Beryl in central-western NSW, seeks to capitalize on grid access in the state's newly designated renewable energy zones. These zones are designed to streamline renewable energy projects and ensure grid stability as Australia continues to expand its clean energy infrastructure. Easterly Solar Projects Gaining Ground This project is notable for its location, as most solar developments in New South Wales are concentrated in the central, southwest, and northwest regions. Maison Dieu joins the nearby Bridgman solar project, proposed by Mitsubishi, in pushing the boundaries for solar energy projects further east.
