Ausgrid to Lead Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ)

The New South Wales Government has signed a commitment deed appointing Ausgrid as the preferred network operator for the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). Ausgrid will design, build, finance, and maintain the REZ network infrastructure, leveraging its existing distribution network of poles and wires instead of building a new transmission network.

This innovative approach, which involves upgrading current infrastructure, will add 1GW of network transfer capacity, enabling more renewable energy generation and storage providers to connect to the state’s grid.

Hunter-Central Coast REZ Network Operator Appointed

Minimizing Impact, Maximizing Benefits

The project demonstrates the State Government’s focus on utilizing existing grid infrastructure to accelerate renewable energy connections while minimizing environmental and community disruptions. The upgraded network is expected to:

  • Deliver significant economic benefits to the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

  • Create local jobs through mandated employment targets and opportunities for local businesses.

  • Power both existing industries and emerging green technologies.

Progress and Community Engagement

With the signing of the deed, EnergyCo and Ausgrid can advance community consultations, finalize designs, secure regulatory approvals, and begin construction upon approval. The Hunter-Central Coast REZ becomes the third in the state to progress to the network operator appointment stage, following the Central-West Orana and South West REZs.

Government and Industry Support

New South Wales Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Penny Sharpe, highlighted the importance of the REZ in increasing renewable energy supply while limiting community impact. “This innovative approach ensures reliable, renewable energy and boosts local economies with more jobs and opportunities for businesses,” she said.

Minister for the Hunter, Yasmin Catley, emphasized the project’s potential to sustain the region’s role as an energy powerhouse while supporting local employment. "Most of Ausgrid's workforce during construction and operation will be from the local area," she added, underscoring commitments to engage First Nations people, women, and youth.

Ausgrid’s Vision for a Renewable Future

Ausgrid CEO, Marc England, expressed pride in delivering the first network extension in a generation. He noted, “The proposed upgrades will integrate over 1GW of renewable energy, enough to power one million homes, while reducing costs and minimizing community impact.”
