Major Push for Battery Uptake
Federal Labor has revealed an ambitious $2.3 billion plan aimed at making home batteries more affordable across Australia. Under the new Cheaper Home Batteries Program, households could see installation costs slashed by approximately 30%, translating to savings of around $4,000 for a typical 11.5 kWh battery system. The scheme is set to launch on July 1, should Labor secure re-election in May. Importantly, this initiative is designed for “virtual power plant (VPP) ready” batteries, whether paired with existing solar systems or new installations. Notably, the batteries don’t need to be connected to a VPP immediately but must have the capability for future integration.

Benefits Beyond Homes
The subsidy extends beyond residential homes, supporting small businesses and community facilities with larger battery sizes of 50-100 kWh. To avoid market stagnation before the official rollout, batteries ordered and installed before July 1 will still qualify for the rebate, provided they are not activated before the scheme’s start date. The government plans to integrate this program into the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which has successfully boosted rooftop solar adoption nationwide.
Driving Cost Reductions and Savings
Much like solar subsidies, the battery discount will gradually reduce over time, reflecting expected cost declines in battery technology. Energy experts highlight the potential for households to save an additional $1,100 annually by adding a battery to an existing solar system. Households installing both solar panels and a battery simultaneously could see annual savings of up to $2,300—almost 90% of an average household electricity bill. Despite state-level incentives, battery adoption has been slow, with only one in forty households currently owning a battery, compared to one in three with rooftop solar. This national scheme aims to change that narrative, increasing adoption and reducing costs through economies of scale.
Strengthening the Energy Grid
Widespread battery installations will also benefit Australia’s energy grid by storing excess solar energy produced during the day and releasing it during evening peaks. This helps to stabilise the grid, potentially reduces the need for expensive infrastructure upgrades, and eases overall network costs—benefits that will ultimately be felt by all consumers. “The sun doesn’t always shine – but households and businesses having batteries means we can keep solar energy on tap and keep energy bills down consistently,” remarked federal energy minister Chris Bowen. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese added, “This is good for power bills and good for the environment.”
Industry Cheers “A Huge Win”
Labor’s announcement has been described as a transformative moment for Australia’s energy landscape. The Australian Greens have also proposed their own policy, offering grants of up to $5,000 or low-interest loans up to $10,000 for battery installations, making this a bipartisan focus ahead of the election. Wayne Smith from the Smart Energy Council (SEC) celebrated the news, highlighting years of industry lobbying efforts that have finally borne fruit. “This is a big deal, and so industry should see this, if it happens, as a huge win,” Smith noted.
Empowering Australians
John Grimes, CEO of the SEC, declared the program as the most pivotal development in consumer energy since the original solar rebates. “Australians can take control of their power bills and when and how they produce and use electricity. This literally gives power back to Australians,” Grimes said. He emphasised that even households without solar would benefit indirectly, as lower demand on the grid helps prevent price spikes. The SEC praised the policy’s thoughtful design, noting that a subsidy of $372 per kWh could bridge the affordability gap for many households considering battery adoption.
