The Western Australian Government has issued its first Statement of Expectation to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), outlining priorities to support the state's clean energy and housing goals.

EPA Receives Strategic Guidance for WA’s Renewables Transition
Key Focus Areas

The statement aligns with recommendations from the Vogel-McFerran Review and emphasizes:

Renewable energy transition: Supporting transmission infrastructure and Collie’s Just Transition.

Economic diversification: Advancing critical minerals, hydrogen, and downstream processing industries.

Housing and forestry: Expanding softwood plantations and increasing housing supply.

Job creation: Prioritizing projects that boost local employment and development.

Guiding EPA Priorities

Western Australian Energy Minister, Reece Whitby, highlighted expectations for the EPA, including:

Aligning assessments with state policies.

Streamlining processes to ensure timeliness.

Avoiding duplication in regulatory efforts.

Engaging effectively with project proponents.

Commitment to Reform

By the end of 2024, 75% of agreed reforms from the Vogel-McFerran Review will be implemented, aiming to modernize environmental approvals while maintaining stringent standards.

Premier’s Vision

Premier Roger Cook emphasized balancing environmental protection with economic growth:

“We’re committed to decarbonizing WA’s economy, creating jobs, and building more houses – all while maintaining the strongest environmental standards globally.”

Minister Whitby assured that reforms won’t compromise independent regulatory assessments but will enhance efficiency and collaboration.
