Unlocking Clean Energy Potential

New South Wales is set to supercharge its renewable energy future as EnergyCo grants access rights to four major clean energy projects in the South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). Combined, these wind, solar, and battery ventures are poised to generate an impressive 3.56 gigawatts—enough electricity to energize over 1.6 million households annually.

Energy Surge: Four Green Projects Win Access to NSW's South West REZ

Competitive Tender Yields Promising Winners

These access rights come after a rigorous tender process conducted by AEMO Services Limited. The high interest among developers highlights the immense potential of the South West region to become a powerhouse of renewable energy innovation.

Certainty for Communities and the Grid

By officially confirming which projects can connect to the REZ’s power lines, the NSW Government is providing clarity and confidence to regional communities. These decisions also ensure that future investments are aligned with the state’s long-term energy goals and community expectations.

Local Benefits Backed by Access Fees

The fees collected from these projects will fund local community initiatives shaped by public input. These programs aim to leave a positive legacy—supporting infrastructure, training, and environmental improvements tailored to regional needs.

Projects Driving the Change

The selected developments include Origin Energy’s Yanco Delta Wind Farm, Spark Renewables’ Dinawan Energy Hub, the Pottinger Energy Park by Someva and AGL, and BayWA’s Bullawah Wind Farm. Together, they also bring more than 700MW of battery storage, which can meet peak-time demand for around 300,000 homes.

Job Creation and Skills Investment

Construction of the projects is expected to generate over 2,800 jobs, including 265 positions for apprentices. This push represents not just a cleaner energy future but also an investment in upskilling local workers and creating long-term economic opportunities.

$17 Billion in Renewable Investment

NSW Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Penny Sharpe, announced that these developments are projected to attract over $17 billion in private investment. She stressed the importance of these initiatives in supporting the state’s shift from coal and ensuring energy reliability for years to come.

Industry Optimism and Community Collaboration

EnergyCo CEO Hannah McCaughey noted that optimizing new transmission lines will help lower power prices across the state. Origin’s CEO, Frank Calabria, emphasized the Yanco Delta Wind Farm’s strategic importance and the company’s broader renewable goals. Meanwhile, Someva and AGL reaffirmed their commitment to community partnerships, regional development, and delivering long-term energy solutions.
