Following a catastrophic storm in New South Wales, Transgrid has mobilized over 120 specialists to repair the damaged 3.5 km transmission line in Broken Hill. With escalated operations in the far west, four of the seven 60-meter emergency transmission towers have been successfully installed, pushing efforts forward to restore stable power in the area.
Efforts to Build Resilience with Grid-Scale Battery Support
To further enhance grid stability, Transgrid is utilizing AGL’s Broken Hill Battery Energy Storage System as an additional power source. This large-scale battery, now part of a microgrid setup, will help reduce reliance on diesel generators by dispatching extra energy during peak hours, marking a significant resilience milestone for the grid.
Community and Team Appreciation Amidst Intensive Recovery
Transgrid’s Sam Pickering commended the Broken Hill community for their continued cooperation and mindful energy usage during this crisis. “We are incredibly grateful for the community’s patience and for every individual who has stepped up to help stabilize power supply here,” Pickering expressed.
Optimizing Operations for Safety and Speedy Restoration
With a focus on safety, Transgrid crews are working within optimal weather conditions, completing tower installations when wind levels permit. Next steps include conductor stringing, testing, and the final energization, set to reconnect the transmission network swiftly.
