Battery Giant Rises in Western Australia

Western Australia's journey towards a cleaner energy future has reached a new high point with the completion of installation works at Synergy’s massive 500MW Collie Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). All 640 battery units and 160 inverters are now in place, making this one of the largest battery systems ever built in Australia.

Leaders Mark the Moment

On 23 April 2025, Premier Roger Cook was joined by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and WA’s Energy and Decarbonisation Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson to celebrate the milestone at the site. The battery is scheduled to begin operations in the summer of 2025–26 and will have the capacity to supply power to around 785,000 homes.

Strengthening WA’s Grid Reliability

The Collie BESS is the third major battery project for Synergy, complementing two existing systems at Kwinana (KBESS1 and KBESS2). Together, they play a crucial role in reinforcing the state’s electricity grid as more renewables come online.

Local Jobs and Big Impact

SCEE Electrical, a Western Australian company, led the construction efforts, creating over 500 local jobs. Premier Cook emphasized that this is part of a broader $5.7 billion state investment in clean energy infrastructure, including generation, storage, and transmission.

“This battery proves our commitment to reliable and sustainable energy,” said Premier Cook. “It’s a cornerstone of our Energy Transformation Strategy and a win for jobs and the environment alike.”

A Cleaner, Smarter Energy Mix

Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson hailed the project as a critical step towards reaching net zero emissions by 2050. She highlighted how investments like this provide affordable, reliable energy while driving local employment and industrial innovation.

“Collie’s battery will be vital in balancing the grid and ensuring Western Australians have dependable energy well into the future,” she said.

Collie’s Energy Legacy Reinvented

Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns echoed these sentiments, stating that the completion of installation work proves Collie will continue to be a key player in WA’s energy landscape—even as it shifts from coal to renewables.

“It’s not just about technology; it’s about preserving Collie’s identity and prosperity through clean energy leadership,” Hanns said.
