Powering Campuses with Clean Energy

Charles Sturt University is taking a bold step towards a sustainable future by committing to 100% renewable energy across its six main campuses in New South Wales. Thanks to a new three-year partnership with Snowy Energy, the university is set to significantly cut its carbon footprint while championing clean energy in regional Australia.

A Win for the Environment and the Economy

Beyond reducing emissions, this agreement supports local job creation and infrastructure development in the renewable energy sector across regional New South Wales. It's not just a climate win—it’s a smart economic move.

Leading with Purpose

Charles Sturt University has long been a trailblazer in sustainability. As the first Australian university to gain carbon neutrality certification back in 2016, this latest partnership reaffirms its leadership in environmental responsibility.

“This agreement is more than just an energy deal—it’s a reflection of our values and our commitment to a cleaner, greener future,” said Ed Maher, the university’s Manager of Sustainability.

A Major Energy Commitment

Under the contract, Charles Sturt will use an estimated 20GWh of renewable electricity annually—enough to power thousands of homes. Starting January 1, 2025, and running through the end of 2027, campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Bathurst, Orange, Dubbo, and Port Macquarie will be powered by Snowy Energy’s TrueGreen electricity.

The Power Behind TrueGreen

Snowy Energy, a division of Red Energy and fully owned by Snowy Hydro, will provide this clean electricity using a mix of hydro, solar, and wind energy. The agreement also includes large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) from Lightsource bp’s West Wyalong Solar Farm—located right within Charles Sturt’s regional footprint.

A Model for Other Institutions

Gordon Wymer, Chief Commercial Officer at Snowy Hydro, praised the deal, highlighting how TrueGreen not only meets energy needs but actively supports the growth of renewables in regional communities.

“Charles Sturt University is showing what leadership looks like in sustainability,” he said.
