Boosting Green Manufacturing

Australia's sole silicon producer, Simcoa Operations, has received a A$39.8 million grant from the Powering the Regions Fund (PRF) Safeguard Transmission Stream. Announced by Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen, the grant will help Simcoa reduce its reliance on coal in silicon manufacturing, supporting local clean energy jobs and enhancing Australia's solar supply chain.

Reducing Emissions with Charcoal

Located at Kemerton Industrial Park in Western Australia, Simcoa plans to transition from coal to charcoal in its silicon production process. This change is expected to lower the facility's carbon emissions by 89%, equivalent to more than 100,000 tonnes annually. The initiative is a significant step toward reducing the carbon footprint of silicon production, crucial for the Solar Sunshot program aimed at strengthening Australia’s solar energy sector.

Silicon’s Role in Solar Energy

As a key component in 90-95% of the world's solar panels, silicon is vital for renewable energy growth. Despite exporting 85% of its annual 52,000 tonnes of high-purity silicon, Simcoa remains a significant supplier for Australia's domestic market, contributing to the country's shift toward sustainable energy.

Supporting Jobs and Sustainability

The grant not only promotes emission reduction but also secures the jobs of 220 employees at the Kemerton site, providing economic stability while pushing for a greener, more sustainable future.
