A $6 billion, 3-gigawatt (GW) wind project has been proposed for Western Australia's south-west, aimed at filling the energy gap as the state's last coal generators shut down by the end of the decade. Spanish company Acciona Energia plans to install 400 wind turbines for the Bellwether project, with construction expected to begin in 2028.

Massive Energy Transition in Western Australia

The project is located 60 km east of Collie, where the state’s remaining coal-fired power stations are scheduled to close. Western Australia's renewable energy share, currently over 40%, is expected to surge as more wind, solar, and storage capacity is built to meet the state’s growing energy demands.

Community Engagement and Environmental Considerations

Acciona is engaging local communities and First Nations groups for support. If approved, the wind farm could generate power by 2030, aligning with the state's coal exit timeline.
