Tropicana Gold Mine Goes Green
Pacific Energy has successfully expanded the Tropicana gold mine’s power system, creating Australia’s largest off-grid hybrid energy solution. The 115MW system, which combines renewable and gas-fired power, began operations on February 7, 2025, under a ten-year build-own-operate agreement.

Powering the Future
The expansion adds 61MW of renewables to the existing 54MW gas-fired power station, featuring:
4 x 6MW wind turbines
24MW solar farm
13MW battery energy storage system (BESS)
By integrating intelligent control systems and virtual synchronous machine technology, Pacific Energy ensures seamless energy stabilization, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Massive Carbon Footprint Reduction
The new system will cut diesel use by 96% and gas consumption by 50%, reducing carbon emissions by 65,000 tons annually. This supports AngloGold Ashanti’s goal to reduce global net carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050.
Exceeding Expectations
Pacific Energy CEO Jamie Cullen highlighted that the facility is already surpassing its targets, generating 38,000MWh of renewable energy during commissioning. The project will replace over 1100TJ of gas annually and nearly eliminate diesel usage.
“This project’s fuel reductions equate to removing 14,000 cars from the road, significantly lowering Tropicana’s emissions,” Cullen stated.
Despite challenges like severe flooding, the project was completed on time, within budget, and with zero injuries, marking a major milestone in Australia’s energy transition.
