The Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI), valued at $175 million, has made significant strides in improving the energy efficiency of over 1,000 social housing properties across New South Wales. Jointly funded by the Federal and NSW governments, this initiative focuses on reducing energy costs, enhancing home comfort, and lowering carbon emissions for social housing tenants.

A Breakthrough in Reducing Energy Bills for NSW Social Housing
Smart Energy Upgrades for a Greener Future

As part of the SHEPI program, properties have received advanced energy-saving upgrades, including heat pump water heaters, solar-sharing systems, ceiling insulation, electric stoves, and split-system air conditioners. These upgrades are designed to make homes more energy-efficient, translating into lower utility bills and improved living conditions. This initiative is not just about cutting costs but also about fostering long-term sustainability for households across the region.

Impact Across New South Wales

Since its inception in January 2024, SHEPI has already benefited households in regional NSW and Western Sydney, with further upgrades planned to reach thousands more. By June 2027, approximately 24,000 social housing dwellings will have received these essential energy upgrades. This effort is making a huge difference in the lives of those who need it most, particularly low-income families and vulnerable communities.

Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Tomorrow

SHEPI is a result of collaboration between the Federal and NSW governments, alongside key partners such as the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, and Homes NSW. The initiative also involves Aboriginal and Community Housing Providers, ensuring that even the most disadvantaged communities benefit from cleaner, more efficient energy solutions.

Empowering Tenants with Energy Knowledge

In addition to the physical upgrades, tenants are being educated on how to best utilize the new energy-efficient technologies in their homes. With the guidance provided, tenants can learn how to manage their energy use effectively, making the most out of the eco-friendly systems in place and further lowering their energy costs.

Leaders in Climate Action and Cost Savings

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, highlighted the importance of SHEPI in alleviating energy costs and supporting the government's broader climate action plans. He emphasized that by making social housing more energy-efficient, the initiative is helping households save money and contribute to a greener future.

State Commitment to Energy Efficiency

New South Wales Minister for Housing, Rose Jackson, underscored the state’s dedication to improving living conditions for social housing tenants. With the installation of solar systems, heat pumps, and improved insulation, the program is driving the transformation of homes into affordable, energy-efficient spaces that can withstand extreme weather conditions.
